Quantifying diffusion of organic liquids in a MOF component of MOF/Polymer mixed-matrix membranes by high field NMR

Confinement of crystals metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in polymers to form MOF/polymer mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) can lead changes intra-MOF diffusion. Such diffusion were previously demonstrated for light gases, and attributed a reduction MOF framework flexibility. However, our knowledge, no direct measurements MMMs the related confinement effect on have been reported organic liquids. In this work, 13C pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR was used quantify self-diffusion methanol, ethanol, p-xylene, o-xylene inside type ZIF-71, which dispersed Torlon polymer MMMs. The intra-ZIF self-diffusivities compared with corresponding measured beds ZIF-71 crystals. observed self-diffusivity dependencies time explained by crystal boundary effects. values not perturbed such effects found be same, within uncertainty, beds. lack an influence is explained, option increase selectivity discussed.
